Understanding Adversity

It's easy to give up under stressful situations. Fear has the tendency to outweigh all other emotions and the unfortunate idea of giving up claims the cake. I'm guilty of thinking this way and succumbing to fear at times, I think we all are. It's easy to become overwhelmed in unfamiliarity and act out of fear. But what I've learned during these moments of adversity is that God is always on our side.

Through the process of preparing for my journey abroad, I've been regaining my faith and reconnecting with God. It's something that has brought me unshakeable peace. I grew up in a Christian home but like some, strayed away from this part of my life during high school and college. This time served as a period of experimentation for me. A time where my beliefs, values, and motives were tested, strengthened, and bewildered. This process is ongoing. But, at the end of the day, God truly is the one putting these obstacles in our way - not to afflict us, but to influence us to look to him for guidance. What I've learned is that God is on our side during these moments of adversity. He wants us to succeed. He also wants to be involved in that success because he knows we cannot get through life without asking for help. No person on earth has been given an obstacle free life and this is why faith exists. Faith in a higher power - a power that will aid in our accomplishments and successes. We're not meant to go through life alone nor are we expected to get through it without help every now and again.

In times of adversity, remember that you are not alone. Remember that adversity exists to strengthen you and change you. Each circumstance in your life is serving for a greater purpose and for a richer future. Without these valleys of fear and despair, we'd most definitely never experience the serenity and peace of the mountaintops.
